YouTube | TEDx Talks | Can you get an MD online? | Shiv Gaglani | TEDxYouth@Ballston
The Osmosis mission is to empower the world’s clinicians and caregivers with the best learning experience possible. Founders Ryan Haynes and Shiv Gaglani started building Osmosis as medical students at Johns Hopkins. Outside of the classroom, they knew there had to be a better way to learn medicine more effectively. What began as a tool to help Shiv, Ryan, and their classmates has transformed into the Osmosis of today, a comprehensive platform that helps people around the world understand health more thoroughly.
In this TEDx Talk, Shiv Gaglani describes why he left medical school to build this online alternative with the former Khan Academy Medicine team. Gaglani has a MBA from Harvard University and is on leave from a MD from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
Osmosis teaches faculty how today’s health professional students learn to become tomorrow’s health professionals. If you want to remain relevant as an educator—and have fun growing while you do—then I strongly encourage you to engage fully with the teaching and learning power of the Osmosis platform.
Osmosis has changed my study life. It gives me the tools to not only do well in my medical school classes, but also to make learning a fun and interactive experience! I love that Osmosis organizes everything for me and offers me preformed questions.
Osmosis is the best resource for individuals who want to save time and stay organized! It is the best for note taking, making flashcards, and studying. I also love the Osmosis videos- they contain high yield information and are presented in a very clear manner. Osmosis is great because it has everything you need in one place and it does the organizing for you, making it extremely valuable and time saving. I spend the majority of my days on Osmosis and I love it!
Using the Osmosis platform to learn has transformed my exam scores from 40% to over 80% in less than two months. The spaced repetition method is so highly effective, and has improved my class ranking so drastically, that I finally have the confidence necessary to achieve great things as a medical student and as a physician. I am so grateful that I was introduced to Osmosis by Ross University because it absolutely changed my life and eased my transition back into the world of Academia.
Compared to other study resources I've used, Osmosis has multi-platform accessibility, with a better-quality question bank, and entertaining and informational videos. What I love the most about Osmosis is that it is structured to your schedule and allows you to create a daily requirement to keep you on task!
Nothing comes close to the way Osmosis breaks down the vast amount of information thrown at you and tells you exactly what to take away from it. I can't pick only one favorite thing, but if I had to, it would probably be the videos that are given when I upload my lectures. When I don't understand a concept, I know right where to look for a better explanation.
Osmosis is a powerful tool used to improve how students approach learning by developing more sophisticated and lasting understanding of the material. It is awesome that Osmosis follows popular and new neuroscience ideas on learning and improving how you study. I think Osmosis is an immediately relevant thing that most medical students would enjoy learning more about.
I love that Osmosis videos are concise and animated. It keeps my attention while still giving me everything I need to know for my exam. Definitely worth the investment!
I love Osmosis because it provides us with one place where we can put all of the information that we need for our Medical School classes. A lot of our study habits require us to put a lot of information INTO our brain, with no opportunity to see how well we can recall it. Osmosis' quiz feature allows us to see how well we can recall the information and highlight areas where our understanding may be lacking. Overall, it's a much more interactive learning environment which, I believe is more representative of how Medical School curriculum should be. Studies have shown that the amount of information that you retain via quizzing and teaching is significantly higher than reading alone, and Osmosis provides a platform for us to do those things. Osmosis has helped me in my classes by allowing me to tailor my studying and become more of an "active" learner instead of a "passive" learner.
Osmosis has all the resources anyone could need, vetted by professionals that have walked this path, combined into one place with the ability to use and schedule it efficiently. I put myself into serious trouble from overextending myself with too many resources and was in danger of failing. Osmosis helped me reign myself in, and I started really grasping the material and was amazed at how much extra time it gave me to do the things I enjoy.
Osmosis is a great resource that I have been using for the past year. The videos provide a wonderful foundation for my learning, and concepts are clearly and concisely explained with up to date information. I also appreciate that I can actively apply and consolidate my learning through USMLE style practice questions and quizzes. I would highly recommend this resource for all students studying medicine or healthcare-related courses!
I realized after my first med school test that I needed a more efficient way to study. I love how Osmosis makes it so easy to create flashcards and also use flashcards that my classmates have made. The collaboration of students is really what separates Osmosis from other study resources.
I love that Osmosis is an all-encompassing study hub! I like that all my materials are centralized, and that I can always find more info when class materials aren't enough!
Osmosis is an exceptional tool that has already greatly improved my study habits in the short time I've been using it. From the pre-generated board fact notecards, to the video descriptions of high yield topics, Osmosis has it all! The app is very user friendly and I've never had any issues with syncing the app data to the website. With Osmosis, it is so much easier to collaborate with other students and utilize each other's notecards. With Anki, that wasn't really possible. I also love how the notecards are all directly linked to the slide in which the information came from, which I think is super helpful. I've saved so much time with Osmosis and I think it is a great tool for any medical student!
Osmosis allows me to synthesize what I have learned from self-study in order to better prepare myself for medical school. Although a lot of the material is out of the scope of my knowledge at this time, making mistakes and seeing the correct answers allows me to learn about things that I haven't been exposed to in a clinical setting yet.
Osmosis is definitely one of the top supplementary tools that I use for learning. Osmosis videos have helped me remember tons of medical conditions by adding a visual aid. I really like that it puts in extra links on my lecture slides that I can click on and find out more information about the medical conditions and other things I am learning in class. I also love the extra resources, such as flashcards, and the ability to create a personalized schedule for Step studying!
I wish I had used Osmosis earlier on in my studies because it has made studying seamless and so much easier! I really enjoyed the clinical questions. When I came across a topic, I felt rusty on, I could just click the word which led me to a review and I could add flashcards related to that topic!
I love the videos Osmosis has that explain difficult concepts in a simplified and easy to understand way! The questions and layout of Osmosis make learning and retaining concepts much easier and less stressful.
My favorite part of Osmosis is their vast variety of videos with clear explanations and animations. And to help secure the knowledge, the use of spaced repetition flashcards makes learning engaging and more enjoyable.
At Dell Medical School we teach modules on mechanisms of disease that start at the end of February of their 1st year of medical school and the pathophysiology of Cardiology, Pulmonary and Renal. We provide students with the learning objectives for this course and some recommended resources with one of them being Osmosis. I had the opportunity to review the Cardiology and related Osmosis videos and felt that they were not only accurate, but they met the needs of the way students like to learn in keeping it consolidated and brief, entertaining and informative. I also thought that Osmosis would not only be good for our medical students, but also as a review for interns and residents, and anyone in training to build their confidence.
Osmosis really provides a lot of memory hooks for you. You can choose to use all of Osmosis’s flashcards, all of your own flashcards, or you can mix the two. The base idea is that using spaced repetition everyday is creating your foundation.
Osmosis allows me to devote more time to leadership positions and my personal life while maintaining my academics. To be honest, my grades have improved only 4-6%, but I am able to do this spending significantly less time than I was previously. And the lecture analysis feature is such a powerful tool that allows me to not just see generic information, but a study aid specifically for my class. It's the whole package!
Osmosis is the best tool for staying organized and integrating classwork with high yield resources, all in one platform. The Osmosis Flashcards are not only extremely relevant, but they also feature cross-references to additional resources. These flashcards, in conjunction with the Osmosis spaced repetition method, have helped me to remember details that I studied from past semesters. I feel that it will help me be more prepared when I begin preparing for Step 1.
As a non-traditional student, Osmosis has really helped me with streamlining my study time. I have other obligations outside of medical school, to include family and military commitments. I find that the best way to study is by creating questions and then practicing them over and over. The spaced repetition, particularly with the flash cards, also helps me in the days leading up to an exam. I utilized Anki for the first block of medical school but then decided to utilize the flashcard function in Osmosis. I find that it is more streamlined and I don't have to worry about syncing my devices. I have the Osmosis app downloaded on all my devices and use the flashcards/questions when I can't be in front of my computer. I've been able to significantly reduce the amount of study time I put in while still maintaining great scores, particularly in Anatomy. The questions and the links to First Aid are probably the most helpful.
Osmosis is great for integrative learning and cutting down time on making study products! I love that it gives me the ability to annotate slides and create flash cards from slides that can be viewed from my phone.
