The book is intended for practicing pharmacists. It is difficult to ascertain the salient points in the text without some elementary background in sterile compounding. This book meets the needs of its intended audience; it has been part of every hospital pharmacy's library since its inception in 1977. The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) has always been considered the most knowledgeable organization regarding hospital practice, and by extension, sterile compounding. It is very credible as an organization. Dr. Lawrence Trissel, the longtime editor of this text, retired several years ago; he wrote the text under ASHP's editorial division, so its quality is still readily apparent.
Doody's Review
"This book is extremely useful to hospital pharmacists. The best aspect is the ability to look up a drug alphabetically and find out immediately what the compatibility parameters are. The book does not contain flowery writing -- just facts that are incredibly helpful to hospital pharmacists. The format has not changed over the years, so generations of hospital pharmacists have used the same text. What has changed is the volume of information; the 2023 edition includes over 400 drugs with close to 3,800 references. This book is precisely what it is intended to be -- a foundational reference book for sterile compounding within daily pharmacy practice."
-- Lawrence Carey, BS, PharmD (Temple University School of Pharmacy) - Doody's Review - previous edition
"I have been using this book for nearly 20 years, and as a hospital pharmacist, I really can't imagine a department of pharmacy being without it. As the Editorial Review Group Chair in Pharmacy for Doody's, I have selected this as a Doody's Core Title. This is a necessary update - indeed, the publisher states that all previous editions are considered out of date."
-- Patrick McDonnell, PharmD (Temple University School of Pharmacy) Doody's Review - a previous edition
"Any practicing pharmacists who frequently deal with injectable drugs would be hard-pressed to find this amount of information on drug stability/compatibility in one easily retrievable resource without this book. It is the gold standard for this type of information."
-- Christopher Widdick, PharmD Student (Temple University School of Pharmacy) - Doody's Review - previous edition
